OMG attention pet owners

Fri Oct 16, 2009, 3:34 PM
I'm at college so i didn't know about this until just now. Like almost all of my goats are dead! my dad called and told me that they died, and there's been this thing on the news about Death Head Mushrooms or something like that. If you have pets check their living area, cause these mushrooms are highly poisonous and I've lost three goats to it! be sure if you see ANY mushrooms to take them up and dispose of them. the symptoms are diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, and possible vomiting. and if your pets are showing any of the signs take them to the vet asap!!

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. You ought to be more specific, though. Amanita Phalloides is your culprit. Very few other kinds of mushrooms cause such gastric upset, and they're easily identifiable (such as amanita muscaria, by its fairytale white-speckled red cap). "Any mushroom" is a little genocidal--but you still ought err on the side of caution and tell people in your area to dispose of any white, offwhite, or white-with-green-tinted mushrooms, as almost any white mushroom growing in one's yard is toxic in varying degrees. (The smaller they are, the more likely they are to pose a threat, as well. The huge "toadstool" mushroom is unlikely to cause pets problems, but shouldn't be eaten by humans.)

It's far too easy to pull the wool over the eyes of sheep who yield in the stead of mediocrity. They'll never realize they've seen it before.
